Barcelona, May 5, 2010.-Last night they held the trophy presentation ceremony of the New York record - Barcelona at Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Montjuïc. His Royal Highness Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias and Girona, presided over the ceremony and presented the trophy that bears his name to the crew of Estrella Damm, the Spanish Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes, and American Stan Schreyer.

S.A.R. Don Felipe de Borbon congratulated the sailors and said: "Today we celebrate the realization of a dream, a dream that takes over my great-grandfather Alfonso XIII, who in 1928 encouraged the first competition between New York and Santander [...] That dream boosted other initiatives, such as Enric Puig and his family. And I'm glad that this momentum has continued, as in the second edition of the Barcelona World Race, which will hopefully mark a new milestone and a success for the Fundació Navegació Oceanic Barcelona, Barcelona, and Spanish sailing. In New York - Barcelona Sailing Record Transoceanic has achieved a record three times: to inaugurate a new competition, uniting for the first time an Atlantic and a Mediterranean city with two cultures that are admired and bind again, and you get a success History, covering the course in that wonderful time. FNOB I want to thank the wonderful organization of the record and have decided to give my name to the trophy. As a sailor lover of the sea and sailing and as a sailor, is so important. "

The Estrella Damm nautical toured 3670 miles (6,800 km) from New York to Barcelona in 12 days, 06 hours, 03 minutes and 48 seconds, a time which means an average speed of 12.11 knots, well above expectations initials. This brand represents a high bar to overcome for equipment, from now on, try to beat it.

They were also awarded Pachi Rivero, Toño Piris, Peter B. Becker, W Hotels team Bocana-Nova, who managed to finish the tour just nine hours later that the Estrella Damm.

The event was held at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona and, among others, was also the presence of the mayor, Jordi Hereu, the Secretary of State for Sport, Jaime Lissavetzky, the consul general U.S. Barcelona, Greggory D. Crouch, and Pere Alcober, delegate of Sports City Council.

A challenge and a success

The record is therefore an open challenge to anyone who wants to beat. The Trofeo Príncipe de Asturias and Girona, which is given to the teams future and boats that they will succeed, is a scale reproduction of the "Miraestels" a work of sculptor Robert Llimós. It is a water sculpture that represents a figure that looks at the sky and keeps a treasure (a star on his hands). The work was first exhibited in 2006 on the occasion of the Barcelona Boat Show and is currently in the port of Barcelona.

The event has allowed closer ties between the two sports not only cities but also cultural and educational, thanks to the various programs that have involved schools and artists from both sides of the Atlantic. To do this, have organized exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events both in one or another city.

In addition, students from various schools of Barcelona and New Yorkers have had the opportunity to first learn about the patterns of Estrella Damm and W Hotels-Nova Bocana, and after following his first-hand journey through the videoconferences. This educational program has allowed students to approach the sport of sailing and complement their knowledge in areas such as geography and natural sciences, while inculcating ecological, sporting and cultural.

Weiss Damm, the “white” beer, brewed according to the traditional German method
  • Damm completes its range of speciality beers with a wheat beer, one of the most-consumed varieties in Central Europe.
  • With this launch, Damm re-states its commitment to innovation.

Barcelona, 24 March 2010.- Damm´s new wheat beer, Weiss Damm, was presented at Alimentaria. Brewed according to the original German recipe of the 16th century Bavarian master brewers, Weiss Damm is characterized by the inclusion of wheat in the brewing process, which gives it an intense body and a taste full of fruity overtones and spiced bases with a cloudy, whitish colour.

With this launch Damm re-affirms its status as market leader in special beers  and as the pioneer brewery in the development of new categories in the market. Examples of Damm speciality beers include Voll-Damm, their double malt beer, Ak Damm, the Alsace beer or Bock-Damm, black beer.

Now, with the launch of Weiss-Damm, the company has brought a wheat beer to the market, a beer type which is heavily consumed in the regions of Central Europe and rapidly gaining in popularity in the rest of the world.

For Enric Crous, managing director of Damm, “the launch shows, once again, our commitment to innovation and the development of new products. Extending our portfolio of products on the market and improving those already present is the engine of the company. With Weiss Damm, we are following in the wake of AK-Damm, Daura and Estrella Damm Inedit.”

The origin of the Weissbier (white beer) style
This style of beer, brewed with a wheat base was originally created by Bavarian master brewers in the 16th century. In this type of beer, the yeast is not filtered (heffe-weissbier), giving it a cloudy, pale-yellow appearance which caused it to be baptized with the popular name of Weissbier or white beer.

Weiss Damm has retrieved the original recipe of the traditional German wheat beers to brew a true Weissbier, with all its unique and distinctive characteristics.

Tasting observation
Weiss Damm is a cloudy, pale-yellow coloured beer with a creamy head, dense and highly enduring  with an alcoholic level of 5% Vol. Very strong-bodied with a taste full of fruity overtones including banana, peach, ripe vine peach and orange skin. Clove stands out in its spiced base. It has a delicate, subtle carbonated flavour. The flavour of malted wheat combines on the palate with a highly refreshing, slight acidic taste. Weiss Damm is a beer which invites you to enjoy its intense aromas and savour it slowly in order to appreciate its full complexity

Best served at 7 º, in a tall glass to maintain the escaping carbonated pearls longer and accentuate the sense of freshness and its crisp flavour.

Format
Following consumer preferences (source: Estudio Millward Brown 2009), Weiss Damm is sold in 33cls bottles, distancing it from the traditional imported wheat beers which are normally sold in 50cls bottles. According to a study carried out on wheat beer consumers, 44% would prefer to drink the beer in 33cls bottles, while only 19% opted for 50cls bottles.

Weiss Damm will be available in catering and food distribution channels from April.

THE GOVINDAS, A HUMAN TOWER TEAM FROM INDIA

Govindas is the name given to the human tower team (castellers) from Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, in India. Over ten days, representatives from this Indian human tower team will be building human towers in Catalonia, in an exchange of knowledge with Catalan teams.

There are currently more than 500 mandals – groups that build human constructions - in Mumbai able to raise human towers 8 levels high. These mandals are linked to different neighbourhoods and may only be composed of men, women or children.

The expedition, due to arrive in Catalonia on the 14th, is composed of thirteen people: eleven govindas, specifically, nine men, one woman and an enxaneta (the topmost child). Each member is from a different mandal, and they are accompanied by a translator and an assistant.

At the invitation of the Vilafranca human towers team, this very special group will be visiting various cities in Catalonia from 14 to 23 November: Vilafranca, Tarragona, Valls, Terrassa, Granollers and Barcelona, in order to share the human tower-building tradition.

Aims of the tour
  • To exchange technical knowledge through both cultures building human towers (Castellers and Govindas).
  • To exchange different ways of understanding human towers as part of each culture’s festive occasions.
  • To bring people from different cultures together through the castellers experience.
  • To ensure that this project is great fun and has considerable social impact.

The God Krishna and the tradition of breaking the handi
It seems that the govindas only build towers on the birthday of the God Krishna. The date was celebrated in August this year, but because the lunar calendar is used the festivities do not have a fixed date, and so next year they will take place on 4 September.

One of the main acts of this festival is the breaking the handi ritual. The handi is a kind of pot hung in the centre of a square, which the mandals must attempt to reach by building a human tower. The pot is filled with milk, butter, clay-coloured earth, five leaves and a coconut to act as a lid. Before the act, a whole ritual takes place involving washing the space where the tower will be built with water. Then, a person fills the pot while singing prayers. After this, the handi is hung up in the centre of the square for the govindas’ enxaneta to break it with his hands or head.

Building human constructions during the celebrations commemorating the birth of Krishna is a relatively recent occurrence, beginning about 70 years ago. The art of the govindas derives from a dance whose pretext was a game in which a pot was broken by building a two-man pillar. Just as in Catalonia the Ball de Valencians (Valencian dance) ended up becoming the human towers, so the breaking the pot dance in India created the modern-day govindas.

Project history
Last August, Fèlix Miret, a member of the Vilafranca human tower team, Sant Terraza, journalist and member of the Sitges human tower youth team, Ramon Codines and Jordina Massaguer, members of the Minyons team from Terrassa, Dolors Rovira, from Vilafranca and photographer Kiko Ventura accompanied director Agostí Coromines to Mumbai (India) to shoot an episode of a documentary about cultural expressions resembling Catalan human tower-building that take place elsewhere in the world.

As a result of this visit, the govindas became enormously interested in learning the technique used by the Catalan castellers, able to raise constructions of 9 or 10 levels while in Mumbai the highest tower to be raised was 8 levels high.
On behalf of the Vilafranca human tower team, Fèlix Miret invited the govindas to travel to Catalonia in order to exchange knowledge and culture, as well as to raise social awareness of the existence of other human tower-building groups around the world. The project was received with great interest, and work soon began to bring it to fruition.

The trip is sponsored by Damm. In addition, the project also receives contributions from various institutions, such as the Vilafranca Council, Tarragona Council, Granollers Council, the coordinating federation of Catalan human tower teams and various human tower teams, particularly the Minyons team from Terrassa, the Xics team from Granollers and the Barcelona teams, with the Vilafranca team playing host.

The brewery group Damm has sponsored Catalan human tower teams since 1997, and recently renewed an agreement for a three-year period, from 2006-2008.
